Announcement from the Utah Scottish Association Board

The Utah Scottish Association Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the Utah Scottish Festival and Highland Games (2021) as a result of the ongoing coronavirus situation. Whilst we understand the decision is disappointing we feel it is the right one for many reasons. We absolutely must protect the future of our festival.

We have met with harsh criticism from some of our members and patrons for this decision. Please understand this:

With the current large gathering rules in Utah (including the number of people allowed at the specific venue, social distancing factors still in effect for large groups, limits on chairs, tables, use of buildings, dining areas and food consumption, sanitation requirements, contact tracing requirements, etc.) it is simply not feasible for us to present an enjoyable (and lawful) festival at this time. We did not make these rules and we certainly did not make this decision lightly. If you would like more information on this feel free to ask.

Our Utah Scottish Festival and Highland Games will take place on June 10th - 12th 2022.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our event in 2022, in the meantime please stay safe and well and look after each other.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the event please use the form on the bottom of this page to contact us.

The Utah Scottish Association has made this decision based on government rules set forth in our state and nation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Highland Dance

Scottish Highland dancing is one of the oldest forms of folk dance, and both modern ballet and square dancing can trace their roots back to the Highlands. Dating back to the 11th or 12th century, the Highland Dances of Scotland tended to be highly athletic male celebratory dances of triumph or joy, or warrior dances performed over swords and spiked shield.

According to tradition, the old kings and chiefs of Scotland used the Highland Games as a way of choosing the best men for their retinue and men at arms.

Highland dancing was one of the various ways men were tested for strength, stamina, accuracy, and agility. Ladies began competing only at the turn of the century. Although historically

Highland dancing was restricted to men, today it is mostly performed by females. No matter who dances them, Highland dances require both athletic and artistic skill.

Registration not yet available for 2022.
